Saatva Mattress Review
Saatva Mattress Ratings
|Factors We Considered||Rating (1-10)|
Key Characteristics of Saatva
Saatva is not a bed in a box which makes it different from other online bed sellers. With an eco-friendly mindset, Saatva aims to reduce their carbon footprint while selling a bed at roughly one-third the price of comparables you’d find in mattress shops and department stores. To demonstrate their value, Saatva displays its specifications next to five top brick and mortar manufacturers.
They offer a well-made innerspring mattress with a dual coil on coil system for enhanced support. It’s available in three firmness levels (plush soft, luxury firm, and firm) and two thicknesses (11.5” and 14.5”) so there’s an option to meet most needs. The optional pillowtop adds 3” of comfort at no additional charge.
Saatva is committed to the environment and social benefit to local communities. They partnered with Seeds of Hope Ministries to donate mattresses to those affected by Hurricane Sandy. They also have ongoing programs with local charities to donate money and goods to help those in need.
The foams inside the Saatva mattress are CertiPUR-US® certified after their product and process were inspected and found to have low VOC emissions and foams free of mercury, lead, heavy metals, formaldehyde, regulated phthalates, and ozone depleters. They use an organic cotton cover OEKO-TEX certified by the supplier, their fire retardants are plant-based, and recycled steel in their coils.
The Saatva Is Perfect For You If…
If you like the feel of an innerspring bed, Saatva could be a top choice. The bed is responsive and has a nice bounce while allowing you to sink-in enough for pressure relief without a stuck in the bed sensation. Because it has a dual coil layer, the bed is very supportive.
For those of heavier weight, Saatva may be an excellent choice because of its construction and dual coils. Lighter weight people should look to the Euro-top 14.5” option for a plusher sleep experience. Heavier people will want to consider the firmer option and the 11.5” slim-line version.
Stomach sleepers should find comfort and support in the firm or luxury firm options. Back sleepers may do well on plush soft, firm, or luxury firm depending on their body weight and whether they have back pain issues. Those with back problems should consider the luxury firm.
The Saatva Might Not Be Perfect For You If…
First, if you don’t like the feel of an innerspring bed, you might not like the Saatva. However, if you had a bad experience with an innerspring in the past, it could be that it was just a poor design. Saatva is very comfortable yet supportive while offering low motion transfer and other benefits.
For side sleepers, you might feel a little pressure if you choose the firmer bed and the slimmer 11.5” option. If you are lighter weight, the pillowtop 14.5” in the plusher version could be the answer. Heavier side sleepers should look to the two firmer options with or without the pillowtop.
The Saatva is constructed to support 300 pounds on each side and 600 pounds total for the queen or king-sized bed. If you exceed that weight, this bed might not perform optimally for you. Those that weigh more should also consider the firmer options to avoid excess sinking-in sensation.
Saatva Mattress Construction
The Saatva innerspring bed comes in two lofts, 11.5” and 14.5” with the 3” difference in height residing in an optional plush Euro-top. There are three firmness options: firm, luxury firm, and soft. With six potential options, there’s an option for most sleepers.
From bottom to top, here’s what you’ll find inside the Saatva:
Support Core – Steel Coils
At the very bottom of the Saatva is a 7/8” fiber pad bottom and on top of that, a 7” layer of 13-gauge steel hourglass coils. The tempered steel is sourced as an eco-friendly recyclable. The coils offer responsiveness and provide durable support with superior airflow as the air is never trapped.
Perimeter Edge – Polyfoam
Both the upper and lower coil layers are encased in a foam perimeter edge for reinforced edge support and anti-sag effect at the sides of the Saatva mattress. This means you can sleep on the very edge of the bed with no diminishment of support.
Comfort Layer – Pocket Coils
The Saatva is unique in that it has coils that provide both support and comfort. The upper layer is 4” thick fabric-encased 14.5” gauge coils. These comfort coils are designed to contour, conform, and reduce motion transfer (the sensation of movement when you or your partner shifts).
Comfort Layer – Memory Foam
On top of the pocket coil layer is a second comfort component which is memory foam made from a bio-soy process that’s CertiPUR-US® rated. This layer is for relief on pressure points and is designed to benefit lower back tension.
Cover – Organic Cotton
The circular knit organic cotton cover is certified all-natural and is treated with Guardin® botanical fabric conditioner for durability and antimicrobial function. Saatva states it has never had an allergic reaction complaint to its materials. The cover helps dissipate heat and wicks moisture naturally.
Optional Comfort Layer – Euro-pillowtop
The optional additional 3” Euro-top is available at no extra cost and contains super-soft foam to add loft and comfort. A European pillowtop is sewn onto the bed rather than floating above it which improves durability and ensures no slippage.
Firmness, Comfort, and Support
Bed design determines firmness
Everyone has their preference for firmness and comfort in their bed. The design of the bed determines these all-important factors. A bed has two main parts: the comfort layer and the support core. The construction, materials, and how the components work together determines the feel of the bed.
The support core should keep your spine aligned in a neutral position while you sleep while the comfort layer(s) offer pressure relief on your hips and shoulders, so you wake without aches and pains. The contour and sink-in effect refer to the softness of the mattress.
The materials, quality, and how they’re arranged all affect the sleep performance of a bed. Every bed feels different to each person as sleep comfort is subjective and deeply personal. In the end, the mattress needs to feel good to you and give you the best night’s rest possible.
Mattresses are rated in the bedding industry on a scale from 1 to 10. At the far right of the scale are beds rated 10, which are very firm. At the far left, those rated 1 are extremely soft. Most people will sleep comfortably in the middle of the spectrum on a medium to medium-firm bed. If you’re lighter, you’ll probably want a softer bed, and heavier people usually need the support of a firmer mattress.
Saatva’s firmness rating
The Saatva mattress comes in three firmness ratings: soft, luxury firm, and firm. Their luxury firm is their best seller and rates in the middle of the scale at around a 6. The soft bed comes in close to a 3 and the firm at an 8. However, your experience of firmness will be subjective to you.
More than 80% of Saatva buyers opt for the luxury firm product. The soft model is preferred by side sleepers and some back sleepers and those that enjoy the feeling of sleeping “in” the bed. The luxury firm works for most side, back, and stomach sleepers or if you shift positions.
The medium-firm option may be a good compromise for couples with different needs. Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer the firmer bed which gives the feeling of sleeping “on” the bed. The dual core layer is very supportive and should offer lasting support.
How Does Saatva Sleep?
Saatva didn’t set themselves up as a bed in the box company. Their mattresses come uncompressed and ready to sleep and promise a luxury sleep experience that rivals beds in fancy hotels. The beds are firmer when they first arrive as the springs compress some in shipping.
The foams will break in, and the springs will relax, and the bed will feel gradually softer within a few weeks. Once you’ve slept on the bed for about a month, you’ll get the full effect of the Saatva model you’ve chosen and can assess whether it works with your sleep preferences.
Those that are constant side sleepers should consider the medium or soft version and stomach sleepers the firmer. The softer bed lets you sink in and enjoy the plush top layer. You may also want to consider the firmer option with the Euro-top if you want substantial support with a nice hug on top.
The Saatva offers a very cooling sleep experience because of the dual coil cores. The bottom steel springs are open in architecture for maximum airflow and the second layer of pocket coils helps keep you from getting hot. The organic cotton cover assists by naturally wicking moisture away.
Some innerspring beds are troublesome when it comes to motion transfer, but not Saatva. The coils work independently to isolate motion and offer nice bounce for sex. The upper memory foam comfort layer adds another component to prevent movement from disturbing you or your sleep partner.
There is no off-gassing with Saatva which is a bonus if you’re put off by concerns of bed-in-the-box unfurling aroma. Because Saatva is never compressed and its foams are VOC-free, you should notice no odor when the mattress is unwrapped from the packaging.
Saatva has been around since 2010, so they have a track record of providing a quality product. Their mattresses are significantly heavier than other brands which indicates quality. The bed should last for years and is designed to last with quality materials, construction, and a generous warranty.

Not only does Saatva offer a premium sleep experience for a very reasonable price, but they also sell their foundations at a modest price point as well. You need not buy their foundation, but if you need one, theirs are a bargain for quality materials.
Saatva was established with the ambition to offer luxury mattresses for a significantly lower cost by eliminating the overhead associated with operating stores. They have done an excellent job of meeting this goal, and this bed is a real value offering premium materials at an affordable price.
Shipping, Trial, Warranty, and Returns
Here’s what to expect when purchasing the Saatva mattress:
Right now, Saatva is offering free white glove delivery and set-up plus removal of your old mattress for free. They deliver to the 48 contiguous US States and most of Canada. You must be home to accept delivery of the mattress, and you’re given a four-hour window, 24 hours before arrival.
During the sleep trial, you may exchange your mattress for a firmer or softer model by paying a $99 comfort exchange fee for delivery of the replacement and pick-up of the original mattress. Returns are less a $99 charge to cover the cost of pick-up, and they refund the remainder.
In the first two years of the warranty, Saatva will replace the bed, if defective, free of charge. From year 3-15, they will repair and recover your mattress to fix issues with a $99 charge each way for pick-up and delivery.
Another option is Saatva’s “Fairness Replacement Option” where you keep your original bed and purchase a new one at a significantly discounted price (25-70% depending on time after initial purchase) rather than them repairing the bed.
Saatva’s 120-night sleep trial begins on the delivery date, and they will accept a return, no questions asked, within that period. They have a less than 5% return rate and offer the option of swapping to another firmness with a $99 delivery exchange fee.
Verdict on the Saatva
In addition to providing an excellent mattress, Saatva’s customer service is top-notch. They will spend time with you pre-purchase answering questions via phone, email, or chat, and post-purchase as well to help you get comfortable with your bed or deal with any issues.
The three firmness options and optional Euro-top offer lots of variety to meet most sleep needs and provide a luxury sleep experience at a far lower price than you’d pay for similar products, particularly if you look at comparable beds in mattress shops and department stores.
